Encryption Fundamentals

End-to-End Encryption

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means messages are encrypted on your device and only decrypted on your recipient's device. Even the platform operator cannot access message contents. This is the gold standard for message privacy. Platforms that don't offer E2EE can potentially access, store, and share your message contents.

Transport Encryption

Transport encryption (TLS/SSL) protects messages during transmission between your device and the platform's servers. Without this, anyone intercepting network traffic could read messages. All legitimate platforms include transport encryption, but this protects only against network interception, not against the platform itself accessing messages.

Server-Side Encryption

Some platforms encrypt stored messages but hold encryption keys themselves. This means the platform can technically access your messages despite encryption. True end-to-end encryption means even the platform cannot decrypt your messages.

Choosing secure chat platforms involves tradeoffs. The most secure platforms often sacrifice convenience, compatibility, or features. The right choice depends on your specific threat model and use case. For casual conversation, platforms with good security practices provide reasonable protection.
